What is FSSAI Registration?

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the governing body responsible for ensuring food safety in India. It regulates and monitors the food business operators (FBOs) by laying down science-based standards for food products and overseeing their manufacture, storage, distribution, and sale to ensure that safe and quality food is available to consumers. FSSAI registration or licensing is mandatory for all entities involved in the food business, including manufacturing, processing, packaging, and distributing food products​​.

Types of FSSAI License

The type of license required depends on various factors, including the business's size, location, and nature of activities​​.There are three main types of FSSAI licenses issued based on the nature of the food business and its turnover:

1. Registration: For businesses with a turnover of less than ₹12 lakh.

2. State License: For businesses with a turnover between ₹12 lakh and ₹20 crore.

3. Central License: For businesses with a turnover above ₹20 crore.

Who Requires an FSSAI License?

A wide range of businesses in the food industry needs to obtain an FSSAI license. This includes, but is not limited to, processors and manufacturers of food, vegetable oil processing units, food packing and re-packing units, warehouses, wholesalers, distributors, suppliers, retailers, online food businesses, importers, exporters, canteens, restaurants, caterers, and food vending agencies​​.

Documents Required for FSSAI Registration

• Photograph of the Applicant

• Government-issued photo ID (AADHAAR, PAN, Voter ID, etc.)

• Proof of business address

• Product List to be dealt with

• Blueprint of the area (Layout Plan)

• Authority Letter

• Property Tax Bill

• Form B Completed & Signed

• Certificate of Food Safety Management System (for renewals or modifications)

• Medical fitness certificates of workers (for renewals or modifications)

• Details of technical personnel in charge

• Changes in any documents or information provided during the grant of the previous license also need to be documented​​.
